STAIRS & MEASUREMENTS

Marble staircase design: steps, landings and details

A staircase needs a measured cutting schedule, a clear edge detail and a finish chosen for its use. Start from your actual stair dimensions and use photographs to explain the look you want.

Choose a stair material and coordinated appearance

Use a photograph to explain the look you want: a quiet white staircase, veined steps or a contrasting landing. Then compare the actual pieces proposed for the treads, risers and landings. Ask whether they can be selected together to achieve the agreed appearance.

Makrana white marble, Albeta and Dungri are starting points for a marble shortlist. You can also compare Indian granite selections where a different pattern or care routine suits the project. The staircase above is a real business photograph; the original is available through its caption.

Prepare a tread, riser and landing schedule

Have your installer measure the finished staircase. Record each piece rather than assuming that all steps are identical. A cutting schedule helps the supplier identify usable slab sizes and the work required.

Measurements to include in a staircase enquiry
Piece or detailInformation to record
TreadsFinished width and depth for each step, quantity, specified thickness and edge detail.
RisersWidth and finished height, quantity and how they meet the treads.
LandingsLength, width, layout, joints and the preferred vein direction.
Side pieces and skirtingShapes, lengths, exposed edges and junctions with walls.
Access and fittingDelivery floor, unloading access, handling route and installer responsibilities.

Your project professional should confirm the staircase geometry, support, fixing and use requirements. Stone-piece dimensions alone are not a staircase design or structural approval.

Agree the edges and finish before cutting

Compare a straight edge, rounded detail or another proposed profile using a drawing or physical sample. Identify which edges will be visible, how the nosing is formed and whether decorative grooves or inserts are part of the brief. Ask the fabricator which details are feasible for the specified pieces.

The chosen finish must suit the staircase's use. Discuss wet shoes, external exposure and cleaning with the installer. A glossy photograph cannot establish traction or compliance with the requirements of your building. Agree the finish and any relevant performance evidence before confirming the order.

How marble steps are priced

A stair quote may be based on square-foot material, a cut-piece schedule or a defined fabrication package. Ask which unit is being used. Identify the material quantity, cutting, shaped edges, finishing, packing, freight and fitting separately.

Area example: a tread measuring 4 ft × 1 ft has a face area of 4 sq ft. Ten such treads total 40 sq ft before allowing for the actual cutting plan. Risers, landings, skirting and processing are additional. This calculation does not set the stone thickness or the installation design.

Read the marble price guide for quote comparison. If a staircase ad says “per step,” ask exactly which dimensions and work the price includes.

Send a brief that can be quoted

  1. Provide a staircase drawing and labelled photographs.
  2. Attach the installer-approved piece schedule.
  3. Select the material, finish and edge reference.
  4. State whether cutting and fitting are included in the request.
  5. Give the delivery location, access and required schedule.

Ask for photographs of the selected stone before fabrication and of the labelled pieces before packing. Browse the business gallery for further stair and flooring photographs, then request a quote for your own measurements.
