Marble vs granite: choose around the room

The useful comparison starts with how the surface will be used. Match the look you prefer with the finish, cleaning routine and fabrication requirements of your project.

Start with the room and daily use

For a living-room floor, the visual relationship between slabs can matter more than a tiny sample. For a kitchen platform, the daily cleaning routine, appliance layout and cut-outs are central to the choice. For steps or an entrance, discuss the finish and conditions of use before comparing colours.

Marble and granite are natural stones with variation between selections. A trade name and a picture cannot replace examination of the actual slabs. Compare your shortlist in the finish you intend to use, and ask your fabricator to review the measurements.

Visual directionCompare white bases, natural veining and slab movement in the Makrana collection.Compare black, red, grey and brown patterns across Indian granite varieties.
Kitchen useAcid exposure can etch marble. Consider whether its care needs suit your routine.Often considered for kitchen counters; confirm the actual stone and finish with the fabricator.
Floor layoutPlan vein direction, shade selection and any bookmatched feature.Plan mineral-pattern continuity, joints and matching across the lot.
FinishDiscuss the appearance and intended use of polished or other proposed finishes.Review a physical finish sample rather than relying on the variety name.

Natural Stone Institute guidance distinguishes acid-sensitive calcareous stone from siliceous stone and recommends care appropriate to the actual material. “Stain-proof” or “maintenance-free” claims are not a useful basis for choosing either surface.

Marble vs granite for flooring

Build a shortlist around the room's palette and your preferred amount of visual movement. For light interiors, compare Makrana White, Albeta and Dungri. For darker or more textured choices, compare Rajasthan Black, Sadarahalli Grey or Tan Brown granite.

Review a full floor layout and installer-approved finish. A polished image does not establish wet-area slip performance. For a continuous floor through several rooms, ask whether the complete required quantity can be selected from a compatible lot.

Granite or marble for a kitchen platform?

Food preparation introduces spills, utensils and regular cleaning. If you choose marble, accept its acid sensitivity as part of the maintenance plan. When considering granite, compare the actual finish, any treatments and the approved fabrication details as well as the colour.

Popular catalogue choices to compare include Absolute Black, Black Galaxy and Steel Grey. The granite kitchen countertop guide explains the measurement schedule, sink and hob cut-outs, seams and edge profiles.

Compare complete cost and care

There is no useful universal rule that one material is always cheaper. Compare quotations for the same usable quantity and a defined finish, with fabrication, transport and fitting identified. A low raw-slab rate can become a different project total once the required work is included.

Use a stone-appropriate cleaner and protect the surface during other building work. Sealing requirements depend on the selected stone and treatment; ask your stone professional what is needed. Read our care guide and discuss the cleaning products you expect to use before ordering.
